Welder awarded £500,000 compensation following accident at work

A welder who was left with life changing injuries following an accident at work has been awarded £500,000 compensation.

The man was trying to weld two pieces of steel together when a metal jack collapsed under him smashing his face. He will not be able to work again and must now wear a plastic mask to protect him from the elements when leaving his home.

Following the accident, the man needed five operations to rebuild his fractured eye socket and he also severed nerves in his left cheek. He has since undergone spinal cord and deep brain surgery to try and control the agonising pain he suffers, however both have been unsuccessful.

The man told manchestereveniningnews.co.uk: “I will be in pain for the rest of my life. I don’t do anything like I used to. My family life has been ruined – I can’t leave my house without a prosthetic mask to help protect my face.

“They never established exactly what was wrong with the jack but the fact is that it wasn’t safe work equipment. I was a healthy and active man before my accident, and in a split second my freedom and independence were taken away from me.”
