Asbestos figures released for North East Lincolnshire

In the last five years 70 people in North East Lincolnshire and surrounding areas have died from asbestos-related illness mesothelioma, figures have revealed.

Overall there were 43 deaths in the Cleethorpes and Gainsborough areas, with a further 18 in Louth and Horncastle and nine in Grimsby,

Particularly common in industries such as construction, engineering, shipbuilding and power generation, many were exposed to the disease between the 60s and 80s, however it can be many years, and often decades, before mesothelioma develops meaning many are only starting their claims now.

Around 2,400 people die of the illness every year and it is believed this figure is set to rise over the next 30 years to an expected 56,000 to 63,000 deaths.
